City-wide consultation launched by Imagine Portsmouth to ask the people how they see Portsmouth in the year 2040

Portsmouth residents are being invited to take part in a city-wide survey looking at what makes Portsmouth unique and what kind of city Portsmouth should be by 2040.

Aiming to bring together the ideas of people from different communities, backgrounds and interests, the results of the research will help shape the future direction of Portsmouth. Participants will be asked:

  • What values should shape the city
  • What Portsmouth should focus on when it comes to culture, the economy, education, the environment, health and wellbeing, and transport
  • What they think makes Portsmouth unique

The survey is the latest step towards the development of an official city vision for Portsmouth – a single, united vision for the future that reflects the ambitions of local people and guides the many organisations, groups and individuals that play a role in city life.

The project is being led by Imagine Portsmouth, a collaboration between key organisations in the city – Portsmouth City Council, University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth Football Club, the Royal Navy, local NHS representatives, Hampshire Constabulary, Hive Portsmouth, Shaping Portsmouth, Portsmouth Creates, Portsmouth Education Partnership and Portsmouth City of Sanctuary.

Before launching the survey, Imagine Portsmouth spoke to hundreds of local people through focus groups and a citizens’ conference to narrow down the values that reflect the city and key priorities for Portsmouth. It is these ideas that are now being put to all residents so everyone has the chance to have their say on the city’s future.

Cllr Steve Pitt, the council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Economic Development and Deputy Leader, comments: “Portsmouth is famous for its waterfront location and celebrated for the passion and pride of its people. We want to harness Portsmouth’s unique qualities to shape our future. This survey gives everyone in the city the chance to have their say on how we do that. We want to hear what people’s priorities are when it comes to key areas of city life, like culture, the economy, education and the environment. We’ll take those ideas to form a roadmap for the next 20 years. Now is the time to get involved if you want to share your vision for Portsmouth.”

The easiest way for residents to have their say is to take part in the online survey. As social distancing prevents face-to-face consultation at the moment, those without access to the internet can call the dedicated phone line on 023 9261 6708 to take part.
