From CP RobinsonHead of Development and Fundraising: Throughout 2025, Portsmouth Cathedral has been undertaking a process called ‘Masterplanning’, working with consultant architects at Buttress to set the strategy and vision for our estates and buildings across the next 20 years. This project, led by our Head of Development & Fundraising is fully funded by the Church Commissioners and will see us publish a full document in early 2026 and then set a course to deliver on the plans set out in the document. This document will come at the end of lots of research and consultation, the next round of which we’d love for you to be a part of.

As someone representing our stakeholder & residents’ community, we invite you to join us for this next engagement event, where we will share the emerging masterplan concept proposals and gather your thoughts on the stories, spaces and opportunities they present. Your insight and feedback will play a vital role in shaping a masterplan that reflects the Cathedral’s significance as both a place of worship and a landmark for the wider community.

We’re running a dedicated session for stakeholders and residents on Monday 24th November to ensure that we capture your views and can reflect the views of all of our connected communities through this consultation.

More information about these consultation and engagement sessions

These sessions for the Portsmouth Cathedral masterplan will focus on four narrative themes, each theme exploring a different aspect of the Cathedral’s identity and its role within the city, celebrating the building’s heritage and its enduring relationship with the people of Portsmouth.

Cathedral of the Sea will explore the Cathedral’s deep connection to Portsmouth’s maritime setting, reflecting its historic ties to the Royal Navy and the integral role the building has played between city and sea.

The Stone and the Mortar will celebrate the architectural evolution of the Cathedral, tracing its journey from its mediaeval origins to the building we know today, and illustrating how it has adapted to serve the city over time.

Anchor of the Faith will highlight the Cathedral’s role as a centre of community life, a place of faith, belonging and shared experience within the heart of Portsmouth.

Finally, The Voyage of Belief will explore the Cathedral’s spiritual story, revealing what faith, music and pilgrimage mean to those who worship, visit and care for this place.

Together, these themes will help guide the development of the masterplan, shaping a vision that celebrates the Cathedral’s heritage, improve the visitor experience and ensure long-term sustainability.

We look forward to seeing you there.
