Queen Victoria’s Forgotten Navy: a talk by James Doherty

We are delighted to have James Doherty with us on Tuesday 21 July with his illustrated talk on Victoria’s forgotten Navy. James is Principal of UTC Portsmouth and has been involved with the college since its foundation. Alongside his career in education, he has a longstanding interest in the military and maritime history of Portsmouth and the Solent. James is a member of the Palmerston Forts Society and has delivered talks on the region’s Victorian defences. He is the creator of what is considered the most accurate map of the Victorian forts of the Solent region: https://www.palmerstonfortssociety.org.uk/fort-maps   His interests focus on the Victorian and Edwardian era, including fortifications, local military history, historical cartography, and the use of digital technologies to interpret and preserve heritage. Through his research and presentations, he seeks to make the history of Portsmouth’s remarkable defensive landscape accessible to wider audiences.
