Jonas Hanway is one of Portsea’s unsung heroes, founder of the Marine society and largely responsible for pushing the Children’s Act 1767 through parliament and ending the misery endured by many children, particularly chimney sweeps. This, and many other notable achievements, probably explain why there is a painting of him in the National Portrait Gallery in London and a monument to him in Westminster abbey. Professor Tony Pointon will describe this and other commendable campaigns, some of which link Hanway to local landmarks such as the Square Tower.
