An illustrated talk: ‘Bygone’, a local heritage digital archive. May 26, 7.30pm
Thursday 26 May 2022 at 7.30 pm at the
Pembroke Gardens Bowling Club
Join Lara Kester, Archivist/Curator and Matt Whelan, Technical Director of Bygone, for an exciting presentation of historical photographs of Portsmouth, Southsea, and the surrounding areas of Hampshire.
Bygone is a digital archive of local heritage, containing photographs and memorabilia dating back to 1880. Lara and Matt aim to present historical information in a contemporary and compelling way, to connect people of all generations to heritage. This event will showcase a variety of imagery from the Collection and demonstrate how to access and view the archive online. It is also an opportunity to have discussion, ask questions and find out ways to support Bygone’s development.
If you’d like to help Bygone expand their archive, they are specifically interested in early images of historical and noticeable landmarks, areas, buildings and streets in Portsmouth and Hampshire. Bygone aims to avoid closely identifiable imagery of people in personal family photographs, instead focusing on imagery that preserves local heritage and displays how the landscape has changed over the years. Bygone accepts submissions via email: archive@bygone.co.uk or if you wish to lend physical photographs to be digitised, please feel free to bring material along to the event.
There is a small charge to cover the cost of hiring the venue; Lara and Matt are offering their time at no charge to FOOPA and its members. Please complete the booking form below and email to gail.baird@131design.org
